What's New from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Carbon Dioxide Storage 101
Scientists and engineers will soon be able to receive advanced training and certification in burying and permanently storing underground the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide as part of a recent stimulus award from the Department of Energy. The DOE awarded nearly $1 million to the Seattle-based Environmental Outreach and Stewardship Alliance (EOS) to develop a carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) curriculum that will be used to build a skilled workforce through regional training. Hot and Cold Moves of Cyanide and Water
Scientists have long known that molecules dance about as the temperature rises, but now researchers know the exact steps that water takes with a certain molecule. Results with small, electrically charged cyanide ions and water molecules reveal that water zips around ions to a greater extent than expected. The findings improve our understanding of a chemical interaction important in environmental and atmospheric sciences. More...

Fungal Map of Mutations Key to Increasing Enzyme Production for Bioenergy Use
During World War II, the bacteria T. reesei frustrated American Army quartermasters in the South Pacific by speeding up the rate at which canvas supplies wore out. Today, scientists are learning how the same fungus is a key producer of industrial enzymes that are used, among other applications, to break down biomass for better biofuel production. PNNL Awarded $6.8 Million for Marine, River Power Studies
The Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory will receive more than $6.8 million over three years to advance the production of renewable power from the natural movement of oceans and rivers. More...

New Chief Scientist Joins Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Louis Terminello, an authority on determining the atomic, electronic and chemical characteristics of materials used in nuclear, energy and other applications, has joined the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. He will serve as chief scientist for Fundamental & Computational Sciences, providing leadership and guidance to researchers studying basic research in a wide range of disciplines. More...

PNNL Named to CIO 100 - Again
Developing an original project management software put the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in a list of the nation's 100 organizations that most effectively use technology to create business value. More...
